This is the Lord’s day, let us rejoice and be glad in it! ‘Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success!’ (Ps. 118:25 ESV).
On this 1st of November, we welcome you to worship once again. In this hour of worship, as we open the Lord’s table for the sacrament of communion, we follow in His command ‘Do this in remembrance of me’ (1Cor 11). We find within the Apostles Paul’s teaching and instruction for communing at the Lord’s table, reflection was given of when Christ was with His disciples (v23). At the time of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, ‘the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, (v24) and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is (broken) for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (v25) In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (v26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Church, as the children of God join together in following the ordinance set forth by our Savior, Christ Jesus, partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine, we proclaim the Lord’s death till he comes. The outward elements in representation of his broken body and shed blood, and our partaking thereof, declare that Christ died for the sins of his people; that he was crucified, bearing our sin upon the cross of Calvary (1Pe 2:24); that he rose again, conquering death (Ro 1:4, John 11:25); that we might be forgiven, redeemed and reconciled; that by his wounds, we have been healed; and shall have eternal life (Jo 3:16).
Christ Jesus, our Lord, he is your good shepherd, who laid down His life for you, that you might have life and have it abundantly (Jo 10:10-11). This is the Lord’s day, a day of celebrating who Christ is, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
