The Joy of the Lord is My Strength

This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Nehemiah  8:10

Blessed greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus,

I trust that your week has been one filled with an abundance of reason to give the Lord God praise.

As we worship from day to day, you will find that there are many selections of worship based on the scripture of Nehemiah 8:12, and in particular, the latter portion of the scripture.  As we study the context of this word, we find that it is given after the children of Israel returned to Jerusalem from exile.   The people were gathered before Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the law, and the Levites who were giving instruction in the Book of the Law (Neh. 8:3-9).   And they said to all the people ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.  For all the people wept as they heard the Law. Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

In this instance, the Israelites were well aware of their failings before God, and as they heard the Law being read they immediately became convicted and wept.  Church, this is to be recognized as the power of God’s word for your life.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 gives it to you that his word is for your teaching, reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

The joy of the Lord can be understood with the teachings of Christ from Matthew 15.  There we find that your Father God in heaven rejoices when that which is lost is found.  It is as your heart is touched by the love of God – as you repent and accept by faith His forgiveness – when you receive His love that covers a multitude of sins – you experience a His joy, for His word teaches, ‘if the Son sets you free (free from the debt of sin), you will be free indeed (John 8:36).  The grace of our Lord God is your strength! Within 2 Corinthians 12:9, the God declares ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness!

I challenge you today Church, no matter the failings of yesterday, as you walk today in faith, anchored in the saving grace of Christ Jesus, begin to rejoice in the strength of the Lord.  Rejoice, knowing that God sent forth His one and only Son, that whosoever believeth upon him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life! Rejoice in the knowledge that you are His precious child, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb,  Christ Jesus your Savior!

Be encouraged today.  The joy of the Lord is your strength.
